Frances Farmer’s Connection to Northern State Hospital

Actress Frances Farmer had a little known connection to Northern State Hospital. One of her physicians, while committed to Western State Hospital during the 1940s, was Dr. Charles Jones.  Dr. Jones, later in 1950, became the superintendent of Northern State Hospital.
When the book The Shadow Land was being written Dr. Jones was contacted by the author. At that time, he made it very clear that she was never lobotomized while at Western State. He worked on the lobotomy ward and never saw her there. The author chose to ignore that info and opted to go for dramatics instead. The author was later proven to be a liar when her family took him to court.
